Keep Your Equipment in Peak Shape This Off-Season

The snow might be gone, but your gear still needs some love. After a long winter of carving turns at Sandia Peak, it’s time to give your skis, snowboard, and boots the attention they deserve. Storing your gear the right way now means fewer surprises and smoother laps when ski season kicks off again in New Mexico. The tips below will help you protect your gear and get the most out of your setup for seasons to come.

1. Clean It Like You Mean It

Before packing anything away, give your gear a full wipe-down. Use a damp cloth to remove any leftover dirt, salt, or grime from your skis or snowboard. Make sure your boots are completely dry and free of debris, especially around the buckles and liners.

Pro Tip: Remove your boot liners and let them air out for at least 24 hours before putting them away. Dry gear now means better comfort and longer lasting equipment later.

2. Wax It and Walk Away

This one matters. Apply a thick layer of storage wax to your ski or snowboard bases and leave it on. Do not scrape it off. That wax acts as a protective shield against drying, rust, and base damage. When winter returns to Willamette Pass, just scrape, re-wax, and you’re ready for a smooth ride.

3. Buckle Up and Ease Off

Loosely buckle your boots to help them hold their shape. Leaving them unbuckled all summer can cause the plastic to warp. For bindings, relieve any tension. If your bindings have a “summer mode,” turn it on to reduce wear on the springs.

For snowboarders it is best to remove or at least loosen bindings to help prevent any damage to the threads holding your bindings on.

4. Pick the Right Storage Spot

Store your gear in a cool, dry, and dark place. Avoid garages that get too hot or too cold, and never leave your gear in your car. Concrete floors can attract moisture, so keep skis and boards raised off the ground when possible.

5. Stay Organized

Label your bins or bags now so you're not digging through gear right before opening day. Store goggles in cases, gloves in pairs, and helmets somewhere safe where they won’t get crushed. When Sandia Peak announces opening day, you’ll be ready to roll.
